I am a Liber Ero Postdoctoral Fellow in the Earth to Ocean Research Group at Simon Fraser University. I am broadly interested in the intersection between ecology and humans. We rely on marine and freshwater systems for the resources they provide, yet our actions (fishing, development) have consequences for those systems that in turn, impact human communities. Thus, my work has two streams. First, I am interested in improving the tools we use to understand the impacts of human actions on marine and freshwater ecosystems. Second, I work to link insights gained from ecological approaches, to what these impacts mean for people. Some of the tools I employ include: population models, ecosystem models, collaborative community-based field work, and cumulative effects assessment.
Some example questions that I focus on include: (1) when organism response to stress changes with life stage, how does that influence overall population vulnerability? (2) How might important subsistence fishery species in the Arctic be impacted forthcoming changes in the region? (3) How can we improve our understanding of population and ecosystem responses to cumulative effects?
